About Fairhope:

Fairhope’s downtown is celebrated for its unique shops and beautiful all-year floral displays. There is an art center and many galleries in town, and Fairhope is famous for its outdoor art show held on the third week in March. Many musical events are held in the area. Eastern Shore Institute for Lifelong Learning has a variety of interesting short term classes. The new library is a great place to sit and read or to access your e-mail.

There are wonderful parks, including the famous park along the bayfront which features the Fairhope pier, the beach, and the duck pond, as well as athletic parks for swimmers, ballplayers, and, of course, tennis. Fishing , boating, canoeing, kayaking  and golf are popular (there are many golf courses within an hour’s drive, including some on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.  The new Five Rivers Delta Center on the Causeway features the wetlands which are so important to the area.

Gulf beaches at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are less than an hour away, and Mobile is across the bay. Bellingrath Gardens is on the far side of Mobile , and is not to be missed.

Fairhope is an outstanding community for retirement, for raising a family, and for vacationing.  It is also a unique community of artists, writers, freethinkers, and eccentrics of all kinds.  Fairhope was established in 1894 as a utopian community by followers of Henry George, who wanted to create a Single Tax colony to implement the single tax concept introduced in his 1879 book “Progress and Poverty”.   The experiment has been successful, and today the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation owns 4,500 acres in and around Fairhope.  When you by a home you own the improvements but have a 99 year renewable lease on the land.
